SEO Warnings from the New York Times
Earlier this month (February 12, 2011) the New York Times published a piece about the “black hat” tactics used by a major retailer to get top rankings during the past holiday season.
Google’s Matt Cutts is quoted in the NYT article stating that these link building tactics do, indeed, violate Google’s own guidelines.
Google took manual steps to even the playing field, and on the evening of February 9, 2011 the retailer found its results melt off the first page.
